Succulents have many amazing characteristics! For some, one of those characteristics is a fuzzy texture. You may wonder “how is it even possible and what purpose could it possibly serve?”. Well I'm here to shed some light.
What is the "fuzz"?
They are specialized epidermal cells that protect the plant. This hair-like fuzz is referred to as "trichomes". Trichomes are made up of living cells. To be more specific, trichomes are microscopic unicellular or multicellular appendages that originate from the outermost layer of plant tissue.
What purpose does it serve?
A fuzzy exterior serves many purposes for a succulent. In dry deserts, it helps trap and condense vapor from the air turning them into droplets for the plant.
It acts as a natural shade cloth which helps succulents tolerate full direct sunlight. The fuzz on some succulents even reflects sunlight. This protects the succulent from burning or drying out.
It also protects the succulent from frost by providing insulation.
The fuzz protects the plant from insect attacks by making it difficult for insects to move around the plant.
I hope this helped you understand the function behind the fuzz surrounding some succulents! Now you know that it is not only super cute, but also super functional.
